Thoughts & Notes from your Lodge President

Membership
Sustained growth is essential to the continued success of our Moose Lodge. Without new members, our Moose Lodge becomes routine and to be honest... a bit boring.
New members represent new ideas, new volunteers, and potential new Leaders. So what can you do? Bring a guest!
Need help with explaining our Mission and what it is we do? Just ask for some assistance. There are many of us who would love to talk to your guest about becoming a Moose!!!

Member Orientation
What is member orientation? It is a required meeting for all new members, which has very sadly been gotten away from.
The primary purpose of the meeting is to inform and educate our new members on exactly what the Moose organization is about... supporting our kids at Moose Heart; our seniors at Moose Haven; and giving back to our Local communities to name a few.
We also cover important information such as:
-
Moose Legion
-
WOTM
-
Higher Degree information.
-
Monthly membership meetings,
-
Where to find out about upcoming activities, How to volunteer for or run activities
Membership Meetings
Good afternoon, Moose Members,
I’d like to take a moment to highlight the importance of our General Membership Meetings and the vital role they play in the health and success of our Lodge. These meetings are more than a formality—they are how we stay connected, informed, and aligned as a fraternity.
Membership meetings ensure that all members receive updates from Moose International, are made aware of members who may be experiencing sickness or distress, and have a dedicated forum to voice perspectives on Lodge matters. Most importantly, they provide the opportunity for members to vote on decisions that require Lodge approval.
During each meeting, minutes are read from both the previous Membership Meeting and the most recent Officers’ Meeting. This transparency ensures that every member has the information needed to make informed decisions on items such as paying Lodge bills or approving projects that involve Lodge funds—whether it’s repaving the parking lot, enhancing the Social Quarters, remodeling the patio, or purchasing new furniture. Any expenditure of Lodge funds requires a majority vote from our membership.
One of the most significant responsibilities carried out during Membership Meetings is voting on new applicants. Once approved, applicants are submitted to Moose International, which issues their Moose ID number and sends their membership card and confirmation email. With their Moose ID, new members can access the Moose International mobile app and obtain their digital membership card. Only after a member can present their card are they eligible to participate in House Games, pull tabs, Keno, and video gaming.
It’s also important to clarify that Social Quarters rules, policies, and staffing decisions are not addressed during Membership Meetings. Members with questions or concerns about SQ operations are encouraged to speak directly with a Board Officer or request time at an Officers’ Meeting.
Our Bar Stewards are volunteers who follow procedures established by the Board of Officers. Members should never debate or challenge a Bar Steward regarding Social Quarters rules or decisions. Any such incidents will be reviewed by the Board, and disciplinary action may follow if warranted.
As you can see, our Membership Meetings cover a substantial amount of business essential to the Lodge’s operations. Per Section 42.6 of the Moose General Laws, a minimum of seven (7) members in good standing is required to conduct a meeting. This matters because our Board consists of eight officers who, when attending a Membership Meeting, participate as regular voting members. When general membership attendance is low, the Board is placed in the position of making decisions that ideally should reflect the broader voice of our Lodge.
I want to be clear: no Board Officer wants to make these decisions without member participation. When attendance is low, it can lead to misunderstandings or frustration about why certain decisions were made. The truth is simple—your Board is here to serve you, and we rely on your input to guide the direction of our Lodge. When that input is missing, we are still obligated to act, but we would much rather do so with your involvement and support.
I encourage each of you to reflect on the importance of your presence and participation. Your voice matters, your vote matters, and your engagement strengthens our Lodge. We hope to see you at an upcoming Membership Meeting.
Respectfully,
Dave Mundschenk
